Outer Cape Overpaintings

Outer Cape and Maine Overpaintings continue conceptual and material ideas of earlier Overpaintings: the idea of redacting naming and other words from maps to eliminate textual information; visually and technically exploring painting out this information with different paints, paint thicknesses, opacities, &c.; and experimenting with painting washes of color over map information and areas thickly overpainted to abstractly capture the palette and spirit of place.

The Cape has been a part of my life since early childhood, particularly the outer cape and its distinct and dynamic coastal environment. Cape related subjects I have made art about include the distinct colors of its shores and beaches, seascape abstractions painted on reproductions of historic maps of the peninsula and surrounding waters, and excerpts from Melville’s “Moby Dick” combined with whale images.
