CURRENT WARS AND CONFLICTS
2015-

There is a lot of suffering due to conflicts in our world. But how much? Due to how many current wars and conflicts? I didn't know. So, beginning in 2015, I went looking for answers, which led to the creation of this series. I started by researching how many wars and conflicts were currently being fought, followed by tallying the number of Belligerents (fighting groups) and Supporters (those providing arms, funds, intelligence, &c.) engaged in them. Next, how many people were affected by the wars and conflicts and how? I attempted to determine the number of people who were displaced as asylum seekers, internally displaced, refugees, were stateless, or killed. Finding accurate numbers seemed impossible, as people affected by wars in these ways are the most vulnerable, fragile, and transient populations on the planet. My work usually visualizes estimates rounded to the nearest half million or million by continent. During the search for answers, I took extensive notes, filling notebooks with textual and visual notations. To date, the Current Wars and Conflicts series includes dozens of works on paper, atlases, prints, and two eight by twelve-foot artworks.
