CHRONICLE

Chronicle (2021-) is an ongoing series visualizing colonization globally over the last six centuries. The series consists of eight large paintings: one of the world, and one of each continent and surrounding region; and many drawings, works on paper, and atlases. In each, countries are painted their predominant nation (flag) color, and painted or drawn lines trace each colonial exploit since 1400 by connecting colonizing/controlling to colonized nations, or lines extend from the colonized to the edge of the map in the direction of the colonizing nation in the dominant country’s color. Lines are rendered in chronological order. An exception is Antarctica, which has no national government. This continent is divided into pie slice-like sections representing all primary and secondary territorial claims by other nations. Dozens of additional unrecognized claims are represented by flag-like rectangles scattered throughout and surrounding the continent.
