In works in CHRONICLE (Colonizing the World Since 1400), (2021-) I abstractly explore ways to visualize all colonization that has occurred globally since 1400. Painted or drawn lines connect colonized and colonizing countries in each artwork. In Colonizing in North and Central America Since 1400 (2021-23), one of eight large paintings currently in this series, the colonizing country is often beyond the painting’s edges so painted lines extend to the painting border the direction of the colonizer. In “Colonizing Lines” works on paper, a pencil line is what represents each colonial exploit, often extending the direction of a colonizer off the map, with the country’s name written in the margins. The exception is works focusing on Antarctica, which is sliced like a pie into triangles representing primary and secondary territorial claims, and many unrecognized claims represented with small colorful shapes scattered throughout the continent.
